DIBELS
Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills
Every 2nd grader will take the DIBELS assessment three times during the year: fall, winter, and spring. This will help us identify the reading skills that a student has already mastered, as well as the reading skills that a student is still improving. Below you will find information about the reading goals for 2nd graders and information about how to help them meet these goals. This is a REQUIRED assessment!

This document has practice passages for 2nd graders. Have students begin reading at the beginning and stop them after one minute to see how many words they read. This is a great way to show them exactly what to expect when taking the DIBELS assessment with their teacher!
Use this Nonsense Words Practice sheet to practice before your beginning of the year DIBELS test.

Practice
If you want your student to improve their scores the best thing to do is PRACTICE! Practice as much as you can. All the test are timed for 1 minute. You can use some resources here, search on Pinterst, or make your own. Keep track of the score each time to track the student's progress.
In the winter and the spring the DORF (words read per minute) is given. For the average student this is where you will want to focus your attention. As well as, having the student retell you in sequential order what he/she just read.

Tips: Oral reading practice is done by reading, reading and more reading. Give your student as many opportunities as you can to read. You can also pick up a book, time the student for one minute. The goal is to increase the number of words read in one minute.

Mid and End of The Year Practice for Tests
At the middle and end of the year DIBELS test for 2nd grade is reading three passages. The student is timed for one minute to see how far he can read. That will tell us how many words he can read in one minute/fluency. Then we will ask the student to retell the story. When retelling the story we are looking for the setting, characters and at least three major events from the story listed in sequential order.
To practice you can google and print 2nd grade reading passages or visit Mrs. Fuller's Pinterest page to find some examples. Or choose a book you have at home. Set the timer for one minute. Have your student ready as quickly and well as he can. Then count the words he read in one minute. The goal would be to increase this number over time. Then ask your student to retell the story to you.
Practice reading everyday, read to your child, let your child listen to the Kindle read to you, or let your child listen to online stories are always to increase the student fluency level. It is helpful for the student to hear a fluent reader! Also make sure your student has independent reading time. Time to relax and read on his own. At 2nd grade a student should be able to sit quietly and read for about 15 minutes at a time.
